  • Slowing down the ubiquitin–proteasome system, the cell’s garbage disposal for old proteins, which reduces muscle breakdown (Holeček, 2017).

Benefits & Evidence

Exercise Performance and Recovery

Polo-Ferrero et al. (2025) found that participants who supplemented with HMB alongside resistance training experienced modest improvements in strength and functional performance compared to those who trained without HMB. These modest improvements may translate into improved stability during lifts and incremental increases in strength.

Su et al. (2024) found small but significant improvements in handgrip strength in people with sarcopenia taking HMB, though gait speed and muscle mass did not improve significantly. This suggests HMB could help preserve the grip strength needed for everyday tasks, from opening jars to carrying groceries.

Aging and Sarcopenia Prevention

HMB combined with resistance workouts may help older adults preserve muscle strength and function as they age. According to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, studies investigating HMB for preventing muscle wasting in clinical populations have yielded mixed results, highlighting the need for further research. Considerations & Safety

Clinical trials indicate HMB does not significantly alter LDL cholesterol in adults (Sadeghi et al., 2024). Individuals with dyslipidemia (abnormal cholesterol or fat levels in the blood) may still choose to monitor lipid panels when adding supplements.
